2027 GMC
Sierra 1500 Preview

Drivers seeking luxurious comfort and confident capability in one stylish, versatile package have much to look forward to with the all-new 2027 GMC Sierra. The nameplate will begin its sixth generation with a restructured lineup, updated amenities, and a fresh look with performance to match. The Sierra family will be streamlined from eight trims to six with the discontinuation of the SLE and SLT, and GMC plans significant changes at the high end of the lineup to mark the AT4X and Denali Ultimate as the most rugged and refined Sierras yet, respectively. The Sierra’s facelift will include new lighting designs, a restyled grille, and a commanding stance for a modern yet classic appearance. GMC is adding two new V8 engines alongside the Duramax diesel powerplant and the gas-burning TurboMax, which will be retuned and coupled with a new 10-speed automatic transmission.

Powertrains

GMC’s small-block V8s are getting a major overhaul, as the 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter versions depart in favor of 5.7-liter and 6.6-liter V8 powerplants. The latter will come standard on the Denali Ultimate and will be the most powerful naturally aspirated eight-cylinder in the segment. The automaker says that new combustion and cooling technology will position the new engines as the benchmark for durability, while improvements to the fuel injection will increase both horsepower and torque, particularly for towing and off-road performance.

The standard 2.7-liter TurboMax engine will return with slight revisions and is expected to retain its best-in-class torque output (430 lb.-ft. on the 2026 model). The standard engine will also swap its outgoing eight-speed automatic transmission for the ten-speed automatic used by the rest of the engine lineup. GM’s class-exclusive Duramax diesel engine will go on unchanged.

Revised Lineup, New Design

The 2027 Sierra will have six trims to choose from: the jobsite-oriented Pro, the mid-grade Elevation, the adventure-driven AT4, the upscale Denali, the trail-ready AT4X, and the plush Denali Ultimate. They’ll all show off a new exterior design marked by a more powerful stance and a boxier front end. The revised grille will be framed by new signature LED headlights that reinterpret the Sierra’s classic horizontal upper and vertical lower light structure. Both the headlights and taillights will be eligible for GMC’s optional welcome and farewell lighting animation; quad exhaust outlets will be available on select trims. The 2027 Sierra’s cabin will boast class-leading standard Crew Cab head and legroom, and higher trims will incorporate real or forged wood accents, a panoramic sunroof, and a reconfigurable MultiPro center console that opens to create a flat workspace between the front seats.

As mentioned, the Sierra’s top two trims will return with major upgrades tailored to their distinct specialties: premium comfort and off-road toughness. At the top of the lineup, the Denali Ultimate will come standard with the aforementioned 6.6-liter V8, but interior screen space is where it will distinguish itself, far exceeding that of its predecessor. The standard 12.2-inch digital instrument cluster will be joined by a 16.3-inch infotainment display (nearly three inches larger than the current touchscreen) and an 11.5-inch front passenger screen, creating a full-width dashboard display. The center screen will articulate to reveal hidden storage, and the passenger display will have a partial cover that hides the lower half of the screen for a slimmer profile. Both are expected to be the largest of their kind in the segment, adding to the Sierra’s list of “best-in-class” attributes. A 15-inch head-up display and an 8.5-inch digital rearview mirror will bring the Denali Ultimate’s total screen space to over 60 inches.

Positioned just below the Denali Ultimate, the AT4X, a dedicated off-roader, will gain new Multimatic jounce control dampers and 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires – both Sierra firsts – along with a 2-inch suspension lift, class-exclusive front- and rear-e-locking differentials, and a new hood design to complement its muscular styling. The redesigned cabin will be outfitted with a host of new amenities: a Timber Mahogany interior, a new standard panoramic sunroof, a new flat-bottomed performance steering wheel, and updated front seats with enhanced bolstering and quilted upholstery for a touch of refinement in the dust. The AEV Edition Package – which enhances the current AT4X with Boron steel skid plates, a stamped steel winch-compatible front bumper, a stamped steel rear bumper with heavy-duty cast recovery points, rocker protection, upgraded wheels, and AEV badging throughout – will be offered on the new model.

Driver-Assistance

No standard driver-assistance suite had been confirmed at the time of this writing, but we expect the 2027 Sierra to carry over many elements of the GMC Pro Safety package found on the 2026 model. Standard safety features should include forward collision alert, a following distance indicator, front pedestrian braking, automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist with lane departure warning, and IntelliBeam headlights with automatic high beams, along with GM’s Teen Driver and Buckle to Drive technologies. Higher trims are also expected to offer the automaker’s Safety Alert Seat. The Denali Ultimate will also get GM’s class-exclusive Super Cruise with Trailering, which adds automatic lane change and turn-signal-initiated lane change for hands-free driving even with a trailer attached.

Infotainment

Based on the 2026 model’s features, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth phone and audio streaming, and a Wi-Fi hotspot will come standard. Google built-in and SiriusXM satellite radio with 360L are currently found on all but the base Pro, making them likely to appear on most of the 2027 lineup. The available Bose Premium Series sound system, offered on the AT4 and Denali, will expand from seven to 16 speakers, including class-exclusive front headrest-mounted speakers. The Sierra will continue to come standard with eight years of GM’s OnStar Basics package, which provides voice assistance, real-time onboard navigation, remote commands, automatic crash response, and in-vehicle apps.
